This is going to be a shorter post, and a bit more of a crowd-sourced one. If you come across it, feel free to leave comments — or if you see it on Facebook or another social channel, feel free to leave comments there as well. After I did the birth bags from around the world post and reflected on what I’ve included in The Birth Bag, I wanted to hear from moms (and dads) about what elements are in their diaper bag. This could inform my product down the line, or it could just be interesting to learn what different people place in a diaper bag.
Some context: there are 2.9 million Google search results for “What’s in your diaper bag,” with one of the top hits coming from BabyCenter entitled “Checklist: What to put in your diaper bag.” They break it down into essentials — diapers, wipes, blanket — as well as ‘extras,’ including a camera, nursing cover, nail clippers, and more. The Simply Chic Mom also has a post about diaper bags and makes a good point near the bottom of it: when her first daughter was under 1, she didn’t carry a purse or diaper bag anywhere. Instead, she carried a travel-sized perfume, hair tie, bobby pins, tampons, lip gloss, mascara, a spare set of keys, and a wristlet for credit and debit cards. Interesting.
The Bump also has an article on how to pack a diaper bag, and they provide a quick tip you’ll hear a lot from doulas and other nursing professionals: have a really small bag with the absolute essentials (diapers, wipes, etc.) always ready. This is good for quick trips or ‘grab and go’ moments.
Alright, so now it’s your turn — when you see this post online, leave me some comments either here or via social. Tell me what’s in your diaper bag, your strategy for a diaper bag, or — if you don’t have kids yet — any concerns you have about a diaper bag approach so far. I’d love to hear from you.
As a nanny I like to use a backpack diaper bag in purchased for 20 bucks at walmart. It has 4 side pockets, a front small pocket and a top small pocket. What I keep in there depends on the agenda the child and season. Right now it’s summer so I keep sunscreen in there, a zip lock with diapers and wipes, a change of clothes, and in the small front pocket a small first aid kit and then I just add in her lunch box and water when we go to leave the house! I also have boogie wipes and hand wipes and kleenex in my car at all times as well as a toy phone.
